Winetoberfest at Anfora: Digging Deep into the Mosel

The Mosel is the only great wine region of the world that is dedicated entirely to white grapes; and not just white grapes, but one white grape in particular; the most noble white grape in the world, Riesling. The marriage of the Mosel’s slate soils and Riesling is one of the great examples of nature's ability to develop symbiotic relationships where the sum is larger than its parts. The German word for slate, schiefer, is frequently seen on Mosel Riesling labels, as is the dialect word lay, which often appears as an adjunct in vineyard names. The Mosel’s meandering course weaves a path creating an infinite array of banks and knolls, nooks and crannies, effectively creating natural vineyard demarcations. This multitude of vineyards established the early concept of site-specific wines in the Mosel, something the rest of the world would only catch up with centuries later. These natural sites became officially codified by the Prussians after the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, who with their notorious penchant for efficiency, looked to establish a clear tax structure based on site quality. After decades of work, a formal map was published in 1868 identifying all the vineyards of the Mosel in a tiered system whereby the best sites were taxed at the highest rate. The effect of this revolutionary step towards transparency cannot be understated; for the first time, growers were able to see the value of their land and negotiate with negociants on a level playing field. This move was decades ahead of any other wine region in the world, even Burgundy.
