Sipping into Autumn: The Best Wines for Fall

Wines for fall are ready for you at Anfora

At Anfora we’ve picked some of our favorite warm, cozy, and budget-friendly wines for for each week.

Week 1 | 10/22-10/28

Ariddu Grillo

Ariddu is the local name for the Sicilian grape Grillo. This delicious wine is citrus, floral, and herbaceous with a saline minerality that will make your mouth water. This light wine is great with light meats and vegetables and its versatility allows it to lend its freshness to even warm and savory meals.  Try pairing this wine with ground turkey stuffed peppers or ratatouille.

Cerasuolo Nero d’Avola/Frapatto Blend

This wine is a blend of 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Frappato. Both grapes are native to Sicily and, for this wine, have been grown organically and undergone native fermentation with indigenous yeasts. This wine offers fresh acidity and has notes of cherry, coffee bean, star anise, baking spices, and dried Italian herbs.

Try pairing this wine with squash or pumpkin soup alongside bread toasted in olive oil and dusted with Italian herbs.

Week 2 | 10/29-11/4

Veronica Pecorino

From Le Marche in Central Italy, this wine offers initial aromas and tastes of lemon and white peach with a slight florality, followed by almond and a crisp minerality. This wine pairs well with baked pork chops with rosemary and garlic alongside roasted asparagus.

Roagna Dolcetto

The grapes in this wine were grown organically, fermented naturally, and underwent limited intervention. This has allowed the grapes to express a meaty/savory quality along with black cherry and notes of red fruit.

This complex and aromatic wine pairs well with a variety of Fall meal favorites, including a warm and savory meat stew to warm you up on those cool nights.

Week 3 | 11/5-11/11

Ti Vitti Inzolia

This wine comes from grapes grown on vineyards on the west side of Sicily. They have been grown with organic and biodynamic practices. This inzolia brims with aromas and flavors of white peach, pear, herbs, orchard fruits, and a saline minerality like the Mediterranean sea air.

The fresh and savory qualities of the Ti Vitti Inzolia complement rich and umami dishes like risotto with mushrooms. This delicious pair will certainly warm you up on a chilly Fall evening.

Caruso and Minini Perricone

These organically grown grapes were handpicked from their vineyard located on the western coast of Sicily, near Marsala. Aromas and flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, licorice, balsamic, and herbs typical of this rare variety will delight your taste buds.

The savory balsamic and herbal flavors of this wine pair deliciously with pastas with ragu sauces. And what’s a better cool-weather comfort food than pasta?

Week 4 | 11/12-11/18

Volpe Pasini Ribolla Gialla

From the prestigious Colli Orientali region of Friuli the grapes in this wine were grown in one of the oldes vineyards in Northern Italu. Ribolla is an indigenous varietal with bright natural acidity and aromas of baked apple, citrus, and fresh herbal notes.

Pair with warm, creamy seafood pasta.  The acidity of this wine will contrast nicely with the creaminess of a rich pasta sauce.

La Caudrina “La Solista” Barbera

This wine hails from an estate vineyard in the Asti region of Piedmont in the village of Nizza Monferrato.  Made with traditional winemaking processes, this Barbera is fruity and inviting with scents of prune, cherry, and subtle spices.

Pair this wine with sausages, a hearty bread and salami plate, or a warm, savory roast

Week 5 | 11/19-11/25 - Thanksgiving Week

Felline Sinfarosa Zinfandel

Named after the remains of an ancient city in Puglia, this wine champions a grape originally brought from Croatia but which has thrived in southern Italy for some time. This Zinfandel (called “Primitivo” in Italy) offers deliciously jammy black fruit flavors among flavors of licorice and sweet tobacco.

We recommend pairing this wine with your Thanksgiving meal, especially those dark meat pieces of Turkey, along with a bit of that homemade cranberry sauce on the side. This yummy pairing will give you one more thing to be thankful for.

Tiberio Trebbiano d’Abruzzo

This wine is made from hand harvested grapes from an estate vineyard in Cugnoli, Abruzzo and fermented using indigenous yeasts.  Aromas of apricot, citrus, with floral notes of jasmine and orange blossom lead you to flavors of green apple, orchard fruits, and almond.

Try pairing this wine with Fall comfort food favorites like baked mac ‘n cheese or rotisserie chicken. This is also a great wine for your Thanksgiving meal, as it pairs well with many classic side dishes.
